Press — Mothers of Marmo Platano
Media resources, exhibition materials, and high-resolution assets for Mothers of Marmo Platano, a long-form documentary project exploring maternal identity and cultural transformation in Basilicata, Southern Italy.
About the Project
Mothers of Marmo Platano documents the lives of eleven women across seven municipalities in the Marmo Platano mountain region of Basilicata. Through intimate audio interviews and bedroom portraits, the project explores how motherhood, tradition, and identity are shaped by place and time.
The bedroom serves as both setting and metaphor—a sacred space where memory, ritual, and family history converge. Each mother’s story reflects broader patterns of demographic decline, migration, and cultural continuity in rural Southern Italy.
The project spans multiple generations, from women born in the 1930s who witnessed wartime hardship and agrarian life, to those born in the 1980s navigating contemporary motherhood while maintaining ancestral traditions.
